The GED® is a recognised international high school qualification and is accepted as an alternative to traditional school-leaving certificates.
It is widely accepted by colleges and universities around the world.
In South Africa, many learners either don’t complete Matric or follow a homeschooling journey and still need a way to finish high school. If your child needs a Grade 12–equivalent qualification for work or further studies, the GED® provides a clear and flexible alternative to mainstream schooling.
Learners usually start GED® preparation from around 16 years old and can only write exams once they are 17 years old.
There is no maximum age to do the GED®.
The GED® is suitable for teenagers and adults who did not complete high school.
The GED® pathway is based on readiness rather than age. Each learner’s timeline may differ depending on their learning background and future goals.
Based on SAQA’s evaluation, the National Senior Certificate is regarded as the closest comparable qualification to the GED®.
Once your child passes the GED® exams, you can submit an application to SAQA for evaluation. Each foreign qualification is assessed individually, on a case-by-case basis, and the final decision is at SAQA’s discretion.
You can enrol and start the GED at any time throughout the year.Â
